Abstractia - A New WP Theme
Published last year, at the end of February under Design
I’ve designed a new theme for WordPress called Abstractia. You can check it out in action through a sample blog I’ve set up here.
The design a simple two-column layout with header and footer focusing on color choice and type. It’s name and design borrow from an older personal project of mine. It’s free to download, share, and use under a Creative Commons license. Let me know what you think of the theme, if you find any bugs, and if you plan on using it. I’ll be submitting it to the WordPress Theme Viewer in a few days when I’m confident all the bugs are out. Read on for download links to the theme file and the .psd design.
Licensing: The Abstractia theme and design are licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 3.0. This means you can do anything with the theme or the design as long as it is attributed to me, preferably through a simple link.

Testing
I’ve tested the theme in the following browsers, let me know if it’s broken in others:
- Internet Explorer 7, 6 - Windows
- Firefox 2 - Windows, OS X
- Safari - OS X
Installation
Installation is easy! Just upload the unzipped folder into your wp-content/themes folder and activate the theme in your WordPress control panel.
Special Thanks
I’d like to thank Bryan Veloso for inspiring me to release my design file alongside the WordPress theme. Bryan annually releases the PSDs of his projects that aren’t wrapped up in copyright, and is also the creator of an excellent WordPress theme, Chaotic Soul.
The PSD is in a zip file for compression. It has a disclaimer notice in the top layer set, please read it then delete or hide the set.
Update 2/24/07: I fixed a small positioning bug with previous/next navigation links on archive pages, fixed smileys, changed the comment form to use text instead of image labels (for internationalization). Submit button is still an image, because I prefer it like that :)
Update 3/16/07 I fixed a positioning bug where the right-side menu extended beyond the height of the ‘blog’ div. I changed the positioning of the layout from absolutely-positioning the right-side menu to using a float-based layout. This means the right-side navigation is more prone to weirdness if you have poorly-formed HTML in your posts, but it also fixes the bug.

Awesome theme Rob and glad to see that my archives aren’t all about leeching. ;P

Thanks for your theme
Hi Rob, nice theme you got here! Do you consider porting it to phpWebSite? If so, I would feature it on http://themes.kiesler.at/ . phpWebSite uses a rather flexible templating concept which is not too far from CSS / HTML but has some nice goodies.
I also got a phpWebSite theme creator forum on http://themes.kiesler.at/, so if you’d need support…
Best Regards,
René
René,
Unfortunately I barely have the time to get Abstractia running on WordPress, let alone other templating/blogging platforms. It’s licensed under a very loose Creative Commons license, so it’s available for others to port it to whichever platform you’d like. I’ll continue to update and support Abstractia on WordPress, but I don’t have the time to code for other platforms.
If you don’t mind, i’ll upload the abstractia theme on wordpress theme viewer.
Ekta.
Ektz, that would be awesome. A lot of people have been having problems getting permission to upload. Please go ahead and add it to the theme viewer.
Rob,
thanks for the open license. I’ll ask around in the phpWebSite community, maybe I can find someone who would like to port it. Attribution should be no problem at all, it’s your work after all.
Best Regards,
René
hello my friend, please this bug –> title post, with VISUAL EDITOR, like chenpress, http://www.gworldfamily.com/t1/error.jpg please fix this ..i love this theme =) thanks n_n
Blackhat,
That bug is likely because one or more of your posts has open HTML tags - probably an open div. I’ll look up chenpress and see if there is any kind of conflict with my theme, but more than likely the problem is an open tag.
There is one rendering error that occurs when the right menu is very long and the page is not very tall, but your error is probably caused by some bad code in one of your posts.

Hi Rob,
There is a bug if post is shorter than the sidebar.
I can’t see my whole sidebar when searching.
Bug page
John,
Thanks for letting me know. I just updated the theme to fix that bug. Redownload it from the link above and let me know if it works for you.
I’ve listed your theme as a ‘Best Loved’ Wordpress theme on ‘Best Blog Themes’!
Let me know if you want to post a shout out on the page =)
Rob,
I can’t figure out why right sidebar is inactive. ㅜㅜ
Did you fix the position of get sidebar and attribute of float?
Thank you for your quick remedy.
Rob,
I can’t figure out why comment popup link doesn’t work well.
It won’t go to comment section, just related post.
How to fix it?
John, I fixed the right sidebar bug. I think I know what’s causing the comment link to not skip down to the comments - I’ll fix that and roll out an update this afternoon. Update: I fixed the comment link bug.
Rob,
Can you tell me the fixed files?
I changed a bit index, single, sidebar, search, archive file so I want to change specific files.
Thanks if you let me know.
Kudos on the fantastic theme! This may be my favorite since I stopped using Regulus a year ago.
This is a beautiful theme, Rob. Have you considered updating it to work with Wordpress’ sidebar widgets? I only tried widgets out just yesterday, but frankly, I’m a fan. Automattic has a good writeup on the process here.
Rob, when I do a search on the demo page, the sidebar is shoved way down the page.. any way of fixing this?
Absolutely gorgeous theme. And it would be my favorite…BUT, I can’t use it. Need it to be widget friendly. But look out world…if you ever get it to see those wascally widgets…you’ll have to pry it from my cold, dead fingers.
Anyway, thanks for your efforts. In a world of color blind and no taste designers, you’re a breath of fresh air.

Wonderful template - lovely to look at. Widget capability would be a great enhancement.
Thanks for creating this!
Chris
Rob,
The theme looks great but I might have found a bug on the search result template. The body of the sidebar is being nudged below the search results….have at it :)

Hi, I like the design: but it isn’t widget ready, and when I added code to make it widget ready - in sidebar.php . . from http://automattic.com/code/widgets/themes/
which is . . .
and created a functions.php file, I got this error:
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected $end in /home/worthd/public_html/blog/wp-content/themes/abstractia/sidebar.php on line 32
Any ideas?
Thanks Rob
Rob,
First I have to thank you for this great design!
Is there a way to make the blog not be the default page. I have a main page I would like to use, but when I set wordpress to go there, I can no longer access the Blog.
Ideas?
[…] ?? WordPress 2.3 ? Abstractia ??? ?????. ? ??? ???? ? ??? ??? WP ? ?? […]
my congratulations for the beautiful theme.

Hi, I absolutely love the theme, my only problem is that when I activate it I no longer have the ability to change the static page template , the drop down box disappears (basically, there’s a page on which I need to remove the sidebar). I’m using wordpress 2.3
I understand you’re busy but any help would be greatly appreciated,
thanks so much!!
Awesome theme! There seems to be a weird issue regarding plugins that add links to the bottom of a post. I was using obsocialbookmarker with my old theme (WP 2.0.5) and it still worked after I upgraded to WP 2.3. When I switch to Abstractia, the links show up, the markup looks correct, but the links don’t function. The links act like they are disabled. Bookmarks work with pages and posts that are accessed if you go through an archive link first (strange as it may seem).
Any ideas? TIA…
Somethings I solved on my own:
1. Search results and sidebar misaligned: in search.php, move from the bottom of the template to the top just below . The search page will now display correctly, without the sidebar being shoved to the bottom.
2. ‘Disabled’ bookmarking links were due to the subpostmeta css class using the full width of the post area and a default z-order that put that element over the links causing them to behave as if they were disabled. I added the following change to the layout css:
.subpostmeta {
width: 405px;
}
There was a bit more to this such as floating my bookmark links to the right and the subpostmeta to the left. The width prevented the element overlap which was causing the problem.
Cheers!
Hi…
I am new to blogging. I have a WordPress page and a hosting service.
I would like to use your “ABSTRACTIA” theme. I tried once to download a theme but there were no instructions as to what to do once I got it downloaded. I will try your directions. How do I “upload the unzipped folder into your wp-content/themes folder and activate the theme in your WordPress control panel?”
I appreciate your assistance. It’s a great theme.
Thanks,
Dave
Hello,
thanks for the theme. I’m using it on my site.
Subcategories don’t seem to be working. It doesn’t display parent categories (mine are all empty, I want to use them as headers).
Is there an easy fix? Thanks!

Love the theme! Wanted to add a sidebar widget for login. I’m getting an error message from WP that the theme is not “widget aware” and though I’ve tried a little hacking, I can’t get the sidebar login widget to work.
Any suggestions? I wanted users to be able to easily login.
Thanks!
